Archive: Victorian Ushers and Deafblind Club Newsletters
These newsletters record the life of the Victorian Ushers Club (VUC), later the Victorian Ushers and Deafblind Club (VUDBC). Members share news, outings, camps, jokes, experiences and ideas about communication, technology and access.
The club grew from a Usher syndrome support group established in 1991. In May 1995, secretary Peter Tarrant described members taking responsibility for their own newsletter after four years of support from Deaf organisations and workers. The group chose the name Victorian Ushers Club that June. In 2001, it broadened its name and membership to include Deaf people with other forms of vision loss.
This page brings together 37 surviving newsletters from 1995 to 2007 and four related documents. There are gaps in the surviving collection.
Reading the documents
Each link downloads a Word document. The original newsletters were offered in different print sizes, Braille and electronic formats. One copy of each available issue is linked here. You can enlarge the text in Word or use your usual reading software; access may vary with the original document’s layout.
The May 1995 newsletter is a recovered copy. Its text and eye-and-ear symbol were recovered from the damaged file, but the Helen Keller portrait could not be recovered.
