October is Mental Health Month, a perfect time to think about ways to care for our minds and bodies. At Deafblind Café on 22 Oct 2025, we explored how movement and activity support mental health, while celebrating the strength and connection of the Deafblind community.
Participants shared how different kinds of movement help them feel better and manage their emotions:
- “When I dance at home with the music loud, it helps lift my mood.”
- “I like walking in nature — it clears my head and helps me feel calm.”
- “I enjoy doing craft, crosswords, and chatting with friends. Keeping busy keeps my mind fresh.”
- “I’ve started running. I use a haptic guiding system. It’s helped my body and mind.”
- “I try to ignore what other people think, and do what makes me feel good.”
Together, people reflected that movement looks different for everyone, but the goal is the same — to feel better, stay connected, and build confidence.
The workshop also reminded us how important it is to have safe spaces where deafblind people can talk openly and support each other. Sharing experiences and feeling understood can be just as powerful for mental health as exercise itself.
This Mental Health Month, we celebrate the ways movement, self-care, and community come together to support wellbeing.
