We were delighted to host two special guests from our sibling organisation, Deafblind West Australians (DBWA), on Wednesday, September 17, 2025.
DBWA is a deafblind community group in Western Australia. It’s sometimes hard for Deafblind people to stay connected, so contact with other Deafblind people around the country is really important to us.
Hannah McPierzie is deafblind and the Chairperson of DBWA. She has Neurofibromatosis and is learning Auslan. Yumei Lim is hearing & sighted and is the new Project Manager, running a deafblind leadership program. They were in Melbourne to attend a National Disability Summit and made a point of dropping by.
Everyone enjoyed meeting them, sharing stories and showing them the deafblind-friendly environment we have created at Deafblind Victoria. Hannah practiced tactile Auslan with Rodney from DBV. DBWA even gained a new potential volunteer, as one of our Communication Guides is moving to Perth soon!
Hannah shared this lovely message about the visit:
“It was just so brilliant to see DBV HQ and meet some of the crew. I loved chatting to the different people there and especially enjoyed connecting with Rodney.”
Thank you, Hannah and Yumei, for making the long trip and strengthening our national deafblind community!
