Can you believe Deafblind Victoria just turned 18?
From humble beginnings, we’ve grown and achieved so much together. On Friday 19 September, we gathered at the Victoria Hotel Ballroom to celebrate this huge milestone and to reflect on just how far we’ve come.
30 Deafblind people joined the celebration, along with many Auslan interpreters, commguides, volunteers, and our friends from Expression Australia, Able Australia, Travellers Aid, and beyond. The room was filled with energy, laughter, and plenty of memories.
Highlights:
- Michelle Stevens and Heather Lawson shared stories of how it all began and their hopes for the future. They were honoured with Lifetime Achievement Awards for their incredible service.
- Alex Sar reminded us of our proudest achievement – that most of DBV’s staff are Deafblind, leading the way for our community.
- Members lit up the night with music and song, showing the amazing talents in our community.
Looking around the room, it was clear how much DBV has grown. This may have been the biggest Deafblind event yet (outside of camp)!
A huge thank you to everyone who came along, especially those who travelled far to be with us, and to all the interpreters, commguides, volunteers and service providers who made the night possible. And a special thank you to Expression Australia for supporting this special celebration.
Eighteen years on, and we’re still going strong. Here’s to the future of Deafblind Victoria!
