Tech Talk 9 – El Braille

Michelle and John review the El Braille portable braille computer:

Michelle: Hi, John. Welcome back to DBV! What did you think of the El Braille?

John: I tried it with the Perkins style keyboard but it froze up. Then I tried connecting the El Braille to a QWERTY keyboard and it worked well, but when I used the Perkins keys it froze again.

Michelle: I have heard the same thing. When El Braille first came out a few years ago, I looked into them. Deafblind people in America had thought the idea of a computer with braille was good, but they found there was an issue with the braille being slow and freezing up.

John: I’m connected to a Deafblind technology group in America. Many of the Deafblind people in that group dislike the El Braille. I think that it’s suitable for hearing blind people who use voice over, but not so much for Deafblind people who use braille.

Michelle: I fully agree.
