We are Deafblind. We run our own organisation. How do we make it happen?

Three DBV members traveled to Canada to present a poster at the 18th Deafblind International World Conference in July 2023. The poster shares what DBV has learned as an organisation run by and for deafblind people. There are downloadable versions of the poster in the resources page of this website.

The poster has five tips, with details for each:

  1. Deafblind leadership
  2. Peer support/mentoring/training
  3. Be resourceful
  4. The right supports
  5. Time and patience

There is a timeline showing some of the milestones on our journey from a tiny volunteer organisation of three Deafblind people with no resources or experience, to an organisation with over 50 members and 8 staff – while staying true to our belief that Deafblind people can build a community, advocate for ourselves and have agency in our lives.

We hope that this resource will inform and inspire Deafblind people around Australia and overseas to establish and grow your own organisation. At the conference, we discovered that there are not many groups like Deafblind Victoria anywhere in the world! The fact that we are here, along with groups like FASOCIDE in Spain and SEDB in India proves that it’s possible. We would love to share ideas and resources with others who share our vision of Deafblind self-determination.
