On National Self Advocacy Day, 8th October last year, SARU (Self Advocacy Resource Unit) presented a Lifetime Achievement Award to our very own Heather Lawson.
At our recent DBV Café, we were honoured to present the award to Heather in person, surrounded by friends and supporters. Alex Sar handed her the clear, circular glass Lifetime Achievement Award.
Heather has dedicated many years to supporting people as they transition into the Deafblind community, always ensuring they feel safe, supported, and genuinely cared for. She has played a key role in raising awareness of the Deafblind community, advocating for Deafblind voices to be included at every level of disability consultation. Thanks to Heather’s endless commitment, Deafblind people have not been overlooked or forgotten.
Everyone enjoyed catching up after the holiday break and shared plenty of laughs — including a spirited game of UNO using our Braille UNO cards. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect, celebrate, and acknowledge Heather’s outstanding contribution to self-advocacy. Photos are included below to capture some special moments.
