It’s important that Deafblind people are able to access the wider community, just like everyone else. However, places like libraries, cafés, shopping centres, parks and art galleries can feel inaccessible to us. Even getting outdoors for exercise can be a challenge.
So the Recreation program has been really valuable for our community. At Rec program, we are among friends in a supportive group. We enjoy experiences in the community and together we work at making those spaces accessible, raising awareness about our Deafblind community and our access needs.
The Rec program has been running in some form since the 1990s, and happens once every month with support from DBV and Able Australia. In 2024, we had some great experiences! See below for the places we visited and some wonderful photos.
See DBV’s what’s on page for Recreation events happening this year. Deafblind people and supporters are welcome!
