During last few years of the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdowns, the isolation experienced by Deafblind was exacerbated. Social distancing and masks increased the barriers and challenges that we face, and during this difficult time the old recreation program run by Able Australia was ended.
During 2021, Deafblind Victoria welcomed two new Deafblind staff members, Alex and Jasper. Alex has previously volunteered on the old Able rec program, and brought his skills to run a new rec program for DBV throughout 2022. It was a great success! This year Alex approached Able Australia to partner with DBV on rec activities and now the program is bigger and stronger than ever.
On 22nd June 2023 we held the “Day on the Bay”, a fan favourite event at Beaumaris Motor Yacht Squadron. It was a very successful day for all. 21 DBV members, 8 Able day program clients and a large number of support staff and volunteers enjoyed a day filled with activities. We drove in some vintage cars and rode on a speedboat. Some participants even took the wheel and steered the boat! We ate fish & chips for lunch.
