Auslan students at Melbourne Polytechnic learned about deafblindness at a workshop run by DBV on the 4th of May 2023. In the future, they may become a volunteer, communication guide or interpreter and work with our wonderful Deafblind community.
Over 40 students and 1 Auslan teacher spent several minutes blindfolded and did activities to get an idea of what it’s like to be Deafblind.
Alex, Joe and Jasper shared their experiences with deafblindness and Jasper did a presentation on haptics.
Thank you to all the participants, Interpreters, DBV staff and members for attending DBW workshop.
Note from Heather Lawson: “I would like to say many thanks Alex, Japser, Joe for helping each others as a learning team work without me. I had other commitment to go and missed the workshop but good idea
to encourag Alex to do facilator at the workshop on behalf of me. I was told that the workshop went very well. Congratulations to deafblind presenters!”
Below are some of the feedback from participants:
- It was an interesting and valuable experience. It showed how difficult
and isolating it can be for Deafblind people. - Isolated, confused, worried about bumping into people and objects.
- Really interesting. I felt worried and isolated. I feel I have a much
better understanding now of DeafBlindness.
